The Supreme Court of Nepal (सर्वोच्च अदालत) is the highest court in Nepal and is the final court of appeal. Established in 1992 in accordance with the Constitution of Nepal, it is based in Kathmandu and comprises a Chief Justice and twenty other Judges. The court’s jurisdiction covers all civil, criminal, and constitutional matters. It has both original and appellate jurisdiction; it can hear appeals from lower courts as well as review decisions made by lower courts. It also hears cases related to elections, public interest litigation, election disputes, appointments to offices, writs, habeas corpus petitions, mandamus orders, prohibition orders and certiorari orders. The Supreme Court has an advisory role on constitutional matters referred to it by the government or any other authority. Its decisions are binding on all other courts in Nepal.
